Ok, My Dear Sisters

An eldest son who is a NEET
A hipster working part-time
A female teacher on the verge of divorce
A spinster
In this family, life goes on, no matter what.

In 2015, 4 CHAIRS THEATRE joined forces with playwright CHIEN Li-Ying to launch the Rewriting Classics Project. Adopting a strategy of “playwright rewriting playwright”, “active” playwrights address the symptoms of contemporary Taiwan in their social and cultural contexts. Rewriting is explored as an avenue to interpreting classics. The rewritten works overcome the temporal, cultural and linguistic gaps for the audience. Through the eyes of the playwright, subtle parallels between the classic and the contemporary are revealed, responding to the calls of the present and conversing with the past.

Ok, My Dear Sisters, the inaugural production of the Rewriting Classics Project, uses Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters as its foundational prototype. Inheriting Chekhov’s obsession with everyday details and his protagonists’ dissatisfaction about life, the adapted play depicts a wealthy landowning family in central-south Taiwan mired in a morass of daily trifles – a reflection of Taiwan current predicaments, both internal and external ones.
