“Hernia Maniac”was originally a short play written by playwright Chen You-Ruei in 2021, commissioned by Taipei Performing Arts Center’s "Taipei Main Station Writing Project" with the Taipei Station as its central theme. After several stages of development, “Hernia Maniac” was performed as a one-person show in 2022 by actor Yang Jia-En, who won the first solo performance competition at the Tua-Tiu-Tiann International Festival of Arts. The performance was also nominated for the 21st Taishin Arts Award in its fourth quarter. Critics praised it for "each line and gesture, highly concentrated and refined through repetitive practice, creating an experience that encapsulates the viewer-actor relationship within the theater, without ever breaking the illusion."

In 2024, 4Chairs Theatre will re-stage“Hernia Maniac”, directed by Artistic Director Hsu Che-Pin, marking another exploration of the solo performance genre after "Every Brilliant Thing" and "FUN Before Outdated". Yang Jia-En, an actor whose rising visibility and increasing discussions have made him a focal point of attention, will once again take on the challenge of this piece. With a seemingly effortless yet meticulously controlled wildness and subtlety, Yang will bring to life Chen You-Ruei's humorously bold and audacious text, delivering a striking commentary on identity and history.
